How to start the difficult conversation - a program of research to address Relationships, Intimacy & Sexuality following Stroke

Wednesday 12 May 2021, 7-8.00pm AEST

Session Overview:
Stroke has a profound impact on the ways in which sexuality is experienced and expressed by stroke survivors. Evidence Based Practise Guidelines recommend that stroke survivors and partners be offered opportunity to discuss sexual intimacy & be provided written information addressing sexuality issues. Yet, research consistently shows that healthcare professionals rarely address sexuality during stroke rehabilitation.  Barriers include limited knowledge, confidence and significant discomfort when raising the topic. This presentation will discuss the evidence and strategies for improving rehabilitation nurses ability to address sexuality.

What will be covered:
  • Definition of sexuality
  • Current literature/evidence on sexuality after stroke
  • Strategies for increasing nurses knowledge, comfort and confidence for addressing sexuality
  • Available resources
